We have the perfect opportunity available as a General Manager overseeing the Mankato Area Funeral Homes, including Mankato Mortuary, Northview - North Mankato Mortuary, Lake Crystal Mortuary, and St. Peter Funeral Home. POSITION SUMMARY

The General Manager is responsible for the daily oversight of funeral operations of the Vertin Company owned Mankato Area Funeral Home locations. While continuing to participate in the daily functions of the businesses, General Manager also provides overall operations and market share leadership and strategic support to all employees within the operating group. The General Manager serves as the bridge between corporate strategy and tactical location execution. Responsible for ensuring all employees within the operating group follow company policies and guidelines. General Manager also possesses and applies a comprehensive knowledge of operational processes and procedures.

 ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Regular Participation and Operation of Primary Location(s)

  • Oversee all daily operations of primary locations(s).
  • Ensure development of an equitable call-coverage schedule.
  • Ensure proper staffing for all services/events/meetings/etc.
  • Participate in the work load of primary location(s), as needed.
  • Monitor staff interactions with consumers, ensuring that Peak Experiences are being created on a regular basis by all staff.
  • Encourage, guide and correct staff behaviors, as needed.

 Strategy and reporting

  • Oversee and continuously improve day to day operations of funeral and cemetery (where applicable) operations and optimize customer value.
  • Ensure staff buy-in on implementation of strategic objectives and initiatives that support Vertin’s mission, vision, and values.
  • Ensure appropriate staffing levels at all locations in market.
  • Manage employee performance using established metrics and expectations, tracking progress against the goals, ensuring timely feedback, and addressing performance problems and issues promptly.
  • Hold staff accountable for metrics, performance goals, reporting, and budgets.

 Management Process and Staff Leadership

  • Implement the Vertin Business System to meet or exceed financial goals.
  • Ensure engagement, satisfaction, and alignment of employees to effectively meet strategic objectives and initiatives.
  • Implement and ensure staff buy-in of management processes, provide feedback on management process as business needs evolve.
  • Demonstrate a thorough grasp of the Vertin Business System and all management processes and be able to train others.
  • Communicate and present information to influence behavior, stimulate innovation, promote best practices and drive organizational change.
  • Facilitate training and ensures compliance for continuing education requirements for the Market.
  • Analyze complex issues/problems and leads/influences individuals and groups in effectively developing and implementing successful resolution tactics.

 Grow Market Share

  • Ensure continuous improvement of customer satisfaction and positive benefit to local families through programs and services to meet customer expectations.
  • Identify marketable opportunities (differentiated service experiences; personal staff highlights, upcoming community events; aftercare programs; testimonials; etc.).
  • Participate in inbound mergers and acquisitions, as requested.

 Business Planning and Financial Management

  • Meet or exceed established operational budget.
  • Appraise Market operating results in terms of costs, budget, management processes, trends and increased profit opportunities.
  • Analyze revenue and profit opportunities for the Market and recommend actions.
  • Review expense request and approve as authorized under company policy.
  • Conduct monthly physical asset review.

 Compliance Oversight, site inspection and health and safety

  • Adhere and enforce all Vertin policies, procedures, guidelines, and compliance standards.
  • Ensure adherence to licensing and compliance regulations and safety protocols.
  • Conduct semi-annual site inspections and audits in Market to include equipment safety, cremation protocol, physical asset projects, usage of forms/procedures and employee knowledge of appropriate PPE.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES 

Directly lead, supervise, and develop funeral professionals and support staff.  Ultimately, responsible for each employee. Maintain systems to measure and evaluate direct reports against established metrics.  Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with Vertin policies and management processes, and applicable laws.  Responsibilities include but are not limited to interviewing, recruiting, hiring, onboarding, assigning and directing work, evaluating performance, reward and recognition, performance management, and termination.  Working with Human Resources, develop strategies to retain top talent and learning and development programs.  Ensures compliance of employee health and safety.



Requirements

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, CERTIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree (B.S./B.A.) or equivalent from a college or university, as required to hold the necessary Mortician License in the required State(s) of operation; plus related experience and/or training within a funeral service setting, where direct oversight/management of others was required.

  • Proven skills in leadership, coaching, and decision-making skills.
  • Is self-motivated and can focus on the minutiae without losing sight of the big picture.
  • Proven ability to successfully lead a large team of funeral professionals
  • Strong Communicator and Consensus Builder; able to understand financial reports and translate those results to others; able to provide management support over multiple sites and expansive geographic area; good understanding of marketing and merchandising.
  • Able to understand the importance of sound business practices and how that supports the overall mission of the business.
  • Solid understanding of marketing and merchandising, as well as clarity on how to utilize both to achieve stated goals.
  • Able to provide management support to all employees at the location level and in the operating group.
  • Possesses a general understanding of Project Management, Task Management and Sales Management.
  • Able to prioritize, multi-task, and effectively delegate tasks when appropriate.
  • Understands financial implications of decisions.
  • Able to foster relationships with other businesses within a local or multiple community culture.
